Curatorial Comment
George Raley, principal of Coqualeetza Institute from 1914 to 1934, believed that physical development was a necessary part of character building. This was based on a Victorian ideal of “muscular Christianity” that viewed athleticism, moral character, and intellectual fitness as part of a well-rounded Christian education. Coqualeetza Institute had many sports teams, including basketball, baseball, badminton, soccer, archery, and track and field.
