Description
TheĀ Gradual Civilization Act was a government policy aimed at assimilating Indigenous people by having them adopt European economic and social practices.
Curatorial comment
An Act to Encourage the Gradual Civilization of the Indian Tribes of the Province (1857) provided a plan for Upper and Lower Canada to assimilate "native populations" into Euro-Canadian society. The Act encouraged plans for enfranchisement and converting Indigenous nations towards private property ownership and European ideals of 'citizenship'.
