Bill - an act to encourage the gradual civilization of Indian Tribes
Bill : an act to encourage the gradual civilization of Indian tribes in this province, and to amend the laws relating to Indians
Canada. Legislature. Legislative Assembly
The Gradual Civilization Act was a government policy aimed at assimilating Indigenous people by having them adopt European economic and social practices.
An Act to Encourage the Gradual Civilization of the Indian Tribes of the Province (1857) provided a plan for Upper and Lower Canada to assimilate "native populations" into Euro-Canadian society. The Act encouraged plans for enfranchisement and converting Indigenous nations towards private property ownership and European ideals of 'citizenship'.
