Residential Schools become national policy

Residential Schools become national policy

1883
Description
Following recommendations made in the Davin Report, Prime Minister John A. Macdonald authorized government funding for residential schools in Canada. Because 1883 marks the beginning of the government's official involvement with the Indian Residential School System, this is sometimes referred to as the "creation" of residential schools.
