"WHEREAS it is expedient to amend and consolidate the laws respecting Indians: Therefore Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:– 1. This Act shall be known and may be cited as 'The Indian Act, 1876;' and shall apply to all the Provinces, and to the North West Territories, including the Territory of Keewatin." (The Indian Act, 1876).
